Once you receive your COEs from NIC and the University of Newcastle, you can apply for your student visa.

NIC students are required to have a valid visa in order to begin studies at NIC.  The visa must be obtained prior to your departure.

Need help with your visa?

If you’ve applied to NIC with the help of an agent, they will assist you with the visa application. If you’ve applied directly to NIC without an agent, you have the following options:

  • Seek the assistance of an agent
  • Consult the Department of Home Affairs for more information

    – keep in mind that each country has different visa requirements

  • Seek the assistance of the Navitas Direct team

Some of the common documents required by the Australian High Commission are as follows:

  • NIC Letter of Offer
  • Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOEs)
  • NIC proof of payment (official receipt)
  • Proof of funds to support your stay in Australia
  • Valid passport and photocopy of passport information page
  • Two photos meeting the Embassy’s requirements

Please note that each Australian Embassy office will also require some of its own documents to be completed.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

All international students must have OSHC. Under condition 8501, international students will have to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the proposed duration of their student visa. For students who will be undertaking a packaged course, there cannot be a gap in the OSHC coverage. OSHC can be arranged through NIC or the University of Newcastle on acceptance of your offer.

What does OSHC cover?

OSHC helps pay for medical and hospital care should you become ill during your stay in Australia. OSHC will also pay for most prescription drugs and emergency ambulance transport. OSHC will not cover any illness or disability that you had prior to arriving in Australia. It will also not cover ancillary services (for example, dental or optical services). If you require ancillary services you can take out extra OSHC, provided by an approved OSHC provider. Make sure you bring any optical or medical prescriptions with you to Australia.

How much does OSHC cost?

This will depend on the duration of your visa. NIC will notify you of the costs in your offer letter.

Don’t delay! Visa applications can take anywhere from a week to several months to get approval. For a list of average processing times by country, please consult the Department of Home Affairs.
