Studying in Australia can be the experience of a lifetime.

Your family and friends back home will be asking you what Australia is like. We recommend that you begin exploring Australia right here in Newcastle where there are many things to see and do. NIC staff recommend the following:

University of Newcastle’s Outdoor Cinema

With such great weather, it is no surprise that outdoor cinemas are very popular in Australia during spring and summer. The University of Newcastle has its very own outdoor cinema and has regular screenings for you and your friends to enjoy.

Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is one of Australia’s leading wine regions. It also produces some of Australia’s best cheeses and chocolates. There are many tours that can take you on a guided tour through this beautiful countryside.

Stockton

Take the scenic ferry across the port to the area of Stockton. Stockton beach is 32 km long and has the largest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. Sand boarding is popular here and can be organised through several tour operators. Stockton beach is also rumoured to be a filming location for Bollywood movies.

Whale Watching

From May to November, thousands of whales swim along the coast for their annual migration. It is not unusual to see them in the distance from the beach, but if you would like a closer look at these gentle giants, there are cruises that operate regularly. You might also see huge pods of playful dolphins.

Climbing Wall

This 18.5-meter wall is the highest in Australia and has around 30 climbing variations. Although this is not recommended for those who are scared of heights, it is very safe as you are secured in a harness. This amazing wall is at the University of Newcastle’s very own Sports Centre.

Shopping

Newcastle is a great place to keep up with the latest fashion and technology. There are several shopping centres which have hundreds of smaller shops as well as large department stores and supermarkets. There are also fashionable areas which have great cafes and smaller speciality shops.

Eating

Australia is a country where many cultures come together. There are many restaurants and cafes that feature international cuisine such as Thai, Indian, Chinese or Spanish. There are also great café districts. For a great Aussie experience, we recommend fish and chips on the beach!

Merewether Beach

This beach is a popular place for Newcastle locals. People go there to surf, skateboard, swim, walk their dog, eat drink or just enjoy the magnificent views of one of Australia’s best beaches. Need we say more…
